Algerian Football Federation finalizes Antar Yahia’s appointment as head coach

1 hour ago 22

Reports have emerged suggesting the Algerian Football Federation is moving to install former international defender Antar Yahia as the national team’s head coach. The claim, which has circulated on social media, arrives at a moment when national football federations across Africa and beyond are increasingly entangled with digital assets, fan token economies, and blockchain-based governance experiments.

Here’s the thing, though. The appointment remains unverified by official channels, and the existing coaching structure tells a different story.

What we actually know about Algeria’s coaching setup

Vladimir Petkovic has been Algeria’s head coach since February 2024. His contract was extended through 2028 just weeks ago, in June 2026.

Under Petkovic, Algeria has compiled a record of 21 wins, 4 draws, and 3 losses. That’s a winning percentage north of 75%.

Post-2026 FIFA World Cup discussions have reportedly included interest in other candidates, such as Eric Chelle. But no official connection between Yahia and the senior national team coaching role has been established through verified reporting.

Yahia earned 53 caps as a centre-back for Algeria between 2004 and 2012. He’s currently managing Angers SCO B, a role he took on July 1, 2025. His post-playing career has leaned more toward administration and development: he served as sporting director for US Orléans from 2017 to 2019, held the same role at USM Alger from 2020 to 2021, and worked as an academy director at Spartak Moscow in 2022.

A respected figure in Algerian football, certainly. A confirmed head coach of the national team, not yet.

With Petkovic’s contract running through 2028 and no official statement from the Algerian Football Federation confirming any change, the smart money treats this as noise until proven otherwise.
