Apple reclaims title of world’s largest company after stock surge

1 hour ago 23

Apple and Nvidia are playing the most expensive game of leapfrog in financial history. On July 17, Apple briefly reclaimed the crown as the world’s most valuable public company, touching a market cap of roughly $4.88 trillion during intraday trading and edging past Nvidia’s approximately $4.82 trillion.

Nvidia closed the day slightly ahead. But the fact that Apple got there at all tells a story worth paying attention to, especially if you hold any assets that correlate with tech sentiment.

The numbers behind the throne swap

Apple’s shares have climbed nearly 23% year-to-date through mid-July 2026. Nvidia, the company that was supposed to be the undisputed king of the AI era, has managed about 7.3% over the same period.

To put the valuations in perspective: both Apple and Nvidia are now individually worth more than the entire GDP of Japan ($4.3 trillion), the United Kingdom ($4.2 trillion), and India ($4.1 trillion).

Nvidia first overtook Apple in market valuation back in June 2024, then formally claimed the top spot in June 2025. It went on to become the first company to reach $4 trillion in market cap in July 2025, then $5 trillion by October of that year.

Why this matters beyond traditional equities

Nvidia’s thesis is infrastructure. Someone has to build the GPUs that power every AI model and every data center. That bet has paid off spectacularly, but infrastructure plays come with infrastructure costs: massive capital expenditure, cyclical demand, and the ever-present risk that customers start building their own chips.

Apple’s thesis is distribution. It doesn’t need to manufacture the picks and shovels if it can embed AI directly into the devices that 1.5 billion people already carry in their pockets. Lower capex, higher margins, and a built-in customer base that refreshes hardware on a predictable cycle.

Apple’s 23% year-to-date gain versus Nvidia’s 7.3% suggests investors are gradually rotating toward companies that can monetize AI without burning through billions in infrastructure spending.

The prediction markets weigh in

Despite Apple’s intraday victory lap, prediction markets aren’t ready to hand it the crown permanently. Estimates suggest Nvidia still holds roughly a 61% probability of maintaining its market cap leadership position through the end of 2026.

The 39% implied probability of a leadership change is significant. It means nearly four in ten market participants think Apple could be sitting on the throne when the calendar flips to 2027.
