Tim Cook is stepping down as Apple’s CEO on September 1, 2026, handing the keys to a company worth roughly $4 trillion to John Ternus, the man who has quietly shaped Apple’s hardware for a quarter century. Cook announced the transition on April 20, calling Ternus “a visionary” and expressing full confidence in his successor’s ability to lead.
Cook will move into the role of executive chairman of the board.
The man behind the machines
Ternus joined Apple in 2001, back when the iPod was the company’s most exciting product and the iPhone was still a gleam in Steve Jobs’s eye. He rose to senior vice president of hardware engineering in 2021, a role that put him in charge of the physical objects that generate the bulk of Apple’s revenue.
His fingerprints are on multiple generations of the iPhone, iPad, AirPods, and Apple Watch. He also played a central role in the transition from Intel processors to Apple’s own silicon chips in Macs.
Cook praised Ternus’s depth of experience across Apple’s product portfolio. The two have made joint public appearances in recent months, including at an Apple TV+ event, projecting a message of continuity rather than upheaval.
What Cook leaves behind
When Cook took over from Steve Jobs in August 2011, the skeptics were loud. Jobs was Apple. Cook was a supply chain guy. The company would lose its creative soul.
Under Cook’s leadership, Apple’s market capitalization climbed to approximately $4 trillion, making it the most valuable publicly traded company on the planet. Annual services revenue, a category that barely existed when Cook took over, now exceeds $100 billion. That includes the App Store, Apple Music, iCloud, Apple TV+, and a growing portfolio of subscription products.
Cook said he will miss being CEO.
The challenges ahead for Ternus
Ternus takes over at a moment when the entire tech industry is racing to integrate artificial intelligence into every product category, and Apple’s AI efforts have drawn mixed reviews compared to competitors like Google and Microsoft.
Apple has key product announcements scheduled for September 9, just days after the official transition.
Analysts have noted that while Ternus inherits a robust financial position, the pressure to deliver meaningful AI integration alongside hardware innovation will define his early tenure.
Cook’s last earnings call as CEO came in Q3 2026, and he used it to emphasize the seamlessness of the handoff. No reported disruptions have surfaced during the transition period.
