Aptos builds infrastructure for AI agents to rent GPUs and settle payments in stablecoins

Aptos is building a stack of tools designed specifically for autonomous agent commerce, anchored by its x402 payment protocol and a partnership with io.net that lets AI agents rent idle GPU capacity on demand. Settlements happen in USDC, transactions finalize in under 50 milliseconds, and fees clock in below $0.0005.

The x402 protocol and why it matters

At the center of Aptos’s AI agent play is x402, a payment protocol purpose-built for micropayments between machines. Agents can pay per API call, per data feed request, or per compute cycle.

Since launching in May 2025, the x402 ecosystem has processed over 100 million payments. USDC dominates, accounting for more than 99% of all settlements.

Aptos CEO and Co-Founder Avery Ching has framed the opportunity in straightforward terms: agents need fast, cheap, and programmable payments with spending limits and audit trails. Ching has emphasized that stablecoins, particularly USDC, represent the optimal medium for agent-to-agent transactions because they combine programmable spending controls with the auditability that enterprise deployments demand.

The stablecoin market cap on Aptos currently sits at approximately $1.9 billion.

GPU rentals through io.net’s Agent Cloud

Through a partnership with io.net, Aptos launched Agent Cloud around March 2026, a platform where AI agents can autonomously discover, negotiate for, and rent GPU resources. Smart contracts handle the terms and USDC handles the money.

$50 million backing the bet

In May 2026, the Aptos Foundation alongside Aptos Labs committed $50 million to fund AI agent tools and infrastructure development. Two products receiving support stand out. Decibel focuses on on-chain order books and perpetuals. Shelby targets decentralized storage solutions tailored for agent workloads.
