ARK Investment Management increases Meta holdings, reduces Alphabet stake

8 hours ago 23

Cathie Wood’s ARK Investment Management scooped up 43,091 shares of Meta Platforms while dumping 84,392 shares of Alphabet on September 9, executing a near-dollar-neutral swap worth approximately $27.9 million on each side.

Meta’s stock surged roughly 6.55% that day on the back of its Muse AI agent launch, while Alphabet shares slid about 2%. Wood’s team essentially sold into weakness and bought into strength.

The numbers behind the rotation

ARK increased its Meta stake by 55.2% during the second quarter of 2026, according to its latest 13F filing. The September 9 trade is a continuation of that accumulation trend.

ARK has been steadily trimming its Alphabet position over several weeks. The nearly identical dollar amounts on both sides of the trade indicate this isn’t ARK pulling money out of tech—it’s ARK reshuffling its tech allocation, swapping one AI horse for another.

Wall Street’s consensus view points in the opposite direction. Analysts at the time of the trade projected a 28.9% upside for Alphabet compared to just 15.2% for Meta. By that measure, Wood is buying the stock with less room to run and selling the one that looks cheaper on a forward basis.

Why Meta over Alphabet?

Meta’s Muse AI agent, the catalyst for that 6.55% single-day pop, represents exactly the kind of product launch that fits ARK’s investment thesis. Meta has been aggressively embedding AI across its family of apps, from recommendation algorithms on Instagram and Facebook to generative AI tools for advertisers and now autonomous AI agents.

Alphabet has concentrated much of its AI firepower on search enhancements and Google Cloud. Google’s search dominance has come under pressure from AI-powered alternatives that threaten to disintermediate the traditional search model.

The contrarian case against this trade

Meta’s stock was already elevated on September 9, lifted by the Muse announcement. Buying into a 6.55% single-day rally means ARK paid a premium for momentum. Alphabet’s 2% decline that same day arguably made it a more attractive entry point, not a reason to sell.

A projected 28.9% upside for Alphabet versus 15.2% for Meta suggests that the analyst community sees more value in the stock ARK is exiting. By boosting its Meta stake by more than 55% in a single quarter and continuing to add in September, ARK is taking on meaningful single-name risk.

What this signals for tech allocators

ARK’s trades are publicly disclosed and closely followed. The $27.9 million size of each leg of this trade is meaningful for ARK but represents a rounding error for either Meta or Alphabet’s market caps. ARK’s willingness to bet against the stock with higher consensus upside suggests conviction in a thesis that the broader market hasn’t fully endorsed.
