Arsenal is reportedly pursuing Chelsea winger Pedro Neto ahead of the January transfer window. Manchester City and Saudi club Al-Hilal are also circling the 26-year-old Portuguese international.
Neto signed a six-year contract extension with Chelsea on September 11, 2026, a deal that ties him to the club until 2032.
What makes Neto so attractive
Since arriving at Chelsea from Wolverhampton Wanderers in August 2024 for £54 million, Neto has racked up more than 100 appearances for the club, contributing roughly 40 goal involvements across all competitions.
Two goals in five appearances under new manager Xabi Alonso suggests Neto is adapting, even as his role has shifted. Alonso has moved Neto from his natural right-sided attacking position into a wing-back role.
For Arsenal, the appeal is obvious. Mikel Arteta’s squad has been in persistent need of dynamic, high-output wide options. Neto’s ability to beat defenders one-on-one, combined with his end product, makes him exactly the kind of profile that could elevate their title push.
The price tag problem
Chelsea’s valuation of Neto sits somewhere between £60 million and £100 million, depending on which reports you trust. Some European outlets have pegged the figure at €70 to €80 million.
During the summer, interest from other clubs was reportedly deterred by Chelsea’s insistence on fees approaching the £100 million mark. Neto himself opted to stay, eventually putting pen to paper on that long-term extension.
For context, £54 million was considered a significant outlay when Chelsea brought Neto in from Wolves. Asking for nearly double that figure just over two years later is ambitious, even by Premier League inflation standards.
Alonso’s role in the equation
Xabi Alonso’s tactical decisions could end up being the deciding factor. If the Spanish manager continues deploying Neto as a wing-back and the player feels his attacking output is being compromised, that frustration could open a door for suitors.
Manchester City’s interest adds another wrinkle. Al-Hilal, backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth, could offer a financial package that no Premier League club would match, though Neto’s age and ambition may make a move to the Saudi Pro League unlikely at this stage of his career.
Chelsea’s willingness to entertain offers above £60 million indicates that, despite the new contract, there is a price at which they would do business.
