Louie Barry, the 23-year-old English striker who once made headlines for swapping Barcelona’s La Masia academy for Aston Villa’s youth setup, is reportedly on his way out of Villa Park for good. Sheffield Wednesday, currently competing in the Championship, is in advanced talks to sign Barry on a permanent deal as of early July 2026.
Barry’s Villa career reads like a cautionary tale about optionality. He signed from Barcelona in January 2020, arriving with the kind of hype that gets academy scouts promoted and fans drafting fantasy lineups. The club held onto the asset, lending it out repeatedly to extract value without committing to integration.
Three loan spells at Stockport County. Stints at Hull City in 2025 and Sheffield United from 2025 to 2026. Across his first two Stockport loans alone, Barry banged in 25 goals in 45 appearances. Despite that scoring record in the lower leagues, Premier League minutes never materialized in any meaningful way.
Barry joining Sheffield Wednesday also adds another thread to the Villa-Wednesday pipeline. He’d be the second Villa academy product at the club, following defender Sil Swinkels.
