Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers to start for England in World Cup semi-final against Argentina

Morgan Rogers, the Aston Villa forward who cost £8 million just over two years ago, will start on the right flank for England in their FIFA World Cup semi-final against Argentina on July 15, 2026.

England manager Thomas Tuchel made the call to insert Rogers into the starting XI after his impact as a substitute in the quarter-final, replacing Noni Madueke.

From Middlesbrough to the world stage

Born on July 26, 2002, Rogers moved to Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for an initial fee of £8 million, with performance-related clauses that could push the total to £15 million.

The 23-year-old cemented his status at Villa Park by scoring in their 3-0 UEFA Europa League final victory over SC Freiburg on May 20, 2026.

Last November, Rogers signed a contract extension with Aston Villa through 2031.

Arsenal reportedly view Rogers as their principal summer transfer target, with discussions involving a potential fee of £100 million. His market value, according to Transfermarkt, sits at approximately €90 million as of June 2026. That’s more than a tenfold increase from his transfer fee just two years prior.

The valuation game and what it signals

The £100 million figure being discussed for an Arsenal move would represent one of the largest transfers in Premier League history. His contract extension through 2031 gives Villa five years of contractual control, strengthening their negotiating position significantly.
