Aston Villa targets Zion Suzuki as Emiliano Martinez’s future wavers

Aston Villa is closing in on a deal worth approximately €35 million (£30 million) for Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, a move that simultaneously addresses the club’s long-term planning and raises pointed questions about whether Emiliano Martinez will remain at Villa Park.

The 23-year-old Japan international has become Villa’s primary goalkeeping target after a proposed move to Paris Saint-Germain fell apart over agent demands. Villa stepped into the void with a matching offer.

From PSG’s loss to Villa’s gain

PSG had reportedly reached an agreement with Parma before the deal unraveled during negotiations with the player’s representatives. That collapse opened a door Villa was apparently happy to sprint through.

Suzuki joined Parma in July 2024 on a contract running through June 2029. A fee of around £30 million for a goalkeeper who started at the 2026 World Cup reflects both his rising profile and the broader inflation in goalkeeper valuations across Europe’s top leagues.

Villa’s pursuit of Suzuki isn’t merely opportunistic. The club had initially identified him as a potential successor to Martinez, suggesting the scouting work predates PSG’s failed bid. When the French club’s negotiations crumbled, Villa already had the groundwork laid.

The Martinez question

Emiliano Martinez, the 2022 World Cup winner with Argentina, has a contract with Villa running until 2029. Juventus has reportedly rekindled interest in the Argentine after earlier links during the summer window, and Villa’s aggressive move for Suzuki suggests the club is preparing for a scenario in which their star keeper departs.

If Juventus tables a substantial offer for Martinez, Villa could theoretically fund the Suzuki deal and pocket the difference, all while getting younger in a critical position.

Villa’s broader transfer strategy

The negotiations remain ongoing as of mid-August 2026, with no formal agreement finalized. What happens with Martinez will likely determine the urgency of the Suzuki deal. If Juventus formalizes a bid and Martinez pushes for a move, Villa will want their replacement lined up before losing their current number one.
