FC Barcelona has made the transfer of Egyptian forward Hamza Abdelkarim from Al Ahly SC permanent for approximately €2 million. The deal converts what began as a loan arrangement in early 2026 into a long-term commitment, with the young striker set to join Barcelona’s pre-season squad.
What the deal looks like
The transfer fee reportedly includes a base cost estimated between €1.5 million and €2 million, with additional performance-related variables that could push the final number higher. There’s also a 15% sell-on clause baked into the agreement, meaning if Barcelona eventually sells Abdelkarim for a significant sum, Al Ahly receives a cut of the proceeds.
Abdelkarim, who is between 18 and 19 years old, had been playing with Barcelona Atlètic, the club’s reserve team, since arriving on loan earlier this year. His performances during that spell were evidently convincing enough for the Catalan club to pull the trigger on a permanent move.
Before landing in Spain, Abdelkarim came through Al Ahly’s youth system. He also represented Egypt at the U-17 World Cup.
Barcelona’s youth pipeline strategy
Abdelkarim’s inclusion in the pre-season squad suggests the club sees him as more than just a reserve team project. Pre-season is where young players get their chance to impress the first-team coaching staff in real training environments.
What this means for investors and the broader market
The 15% sell-on clause is worth watching closely. These clauses have become increasingly common in transfers involving young players from clubs outside Europe’s top five leagues. Al Ahly is betting that Abdelkarim’s value will increase significantly under Barcelona’s development system, and they want to participate in that upside.
One thing worth noting is that this transfer is entirely traditional in its structure. No crypto tokens, no NFT components, no blockchain-based payment mechanisms. While Al Ahly did join FIFA’s NFT marketplace, FIFA Collect, in May 2025, that digital engagement hasn’t crossed over into how the club conducts player transfers.
