Barcelona finalizes €8M deal for defender Jorge Salinas

Barcelona has agreed to sign Jorge Salinas Viadero from Racing de Santander for €8 million, adding another teenager to a squad that increasingly looks like a youth development pipeline with a Champions League license.

The 19-year-old defender, born on April 3, 2007, plays primarily as a left-back but can also slot in at centre-back. Barcelona didn’t just like the player. They liked the math. Salinas’ release clause was set to double to €16 million on July 1, 2026, which means the club essentially bought at a 50% discount by moving now rather than waiting.

Why the urgency made sense

Super-agent Jorge Mendes facilitated the negotiations. The involvement of one of football’s most powerful intermediaries signals that Salinas isn’t some low-profile prospect being quietly added to the B team.

Salinas remains under contract with Racing Santander until June 2029. In Spanish football, when a release clause is triggered, the buying club pays the full amount and the selling club has no ability to block the move. Barcelona simply paid the price and moved on.

What Salinas brings to Barcelona

During Racing Santander’s promotion campaign, he made 34 appearances and recorded 7 assists. In the 2025-26 LaLiga 2 season, he started 30 matches and again recorded 7 assists.

Barcelona’s broader youth strategy

At €8 million, the financial risk here is relatively modest by Barcelona’s standards. The release clause doubling to €16 million next summer would have made this same transfer feel significantly more expensive for exactly the same player.
