Benfica submits €20M offer for Taylor Harwood-Bellis, rejected by Southampton so far

Benfica has made a formal approach to sign Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton, tabling a bid worth approximately €20M (£17M). Southampton said no, but not the kind of no that ends a conversation.

The Portuguese giants have opened talks for the 24-year-old English centre-back, with multiple reports confirming advanced discussions between the two clubs as of mid-August 2026. Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri and Portuguese outlet Record both reported the negotiations.

Why Southampton is holding firm

Southampton’s reluctance to accept €20M makes sense when you trace the money. The club signed Harwood-Bellis permanently from Manchester City in the summer of 2024 for a reported £20M. Accepting Benfica’s offer of roughly £17M would mean selling a player who has improved significantly for less than they paid.

This isn’t the first time Southampton has swatted away interest in their centre-back. Back in January 2026, West Ham came knocking with a £12.5M bid that was promptly rejected.

That contract runs until at least 2028. Harwood-Bellis’s Transfermarkt market value sat at €20M as of May 2026, which means Benfica’s opening bid essentially matches the industry’s baseline assessment.

A dominant Championship campaign

Harwood-Bellis made 48 appearances across all competitions during the 2025-26 Championship season, scoring 7 goals and providing 3 assists. The former Manchester City academy product has also earned one cap for the England national team.

Where things stand and what to watch

The gap between Benfica’s €20M offer and Southampton’s valuation is the central tension. The West Ham precedent from January is instructive: Southampton rejected £12.5M without hesitation, but the current Benfica bid at roughly £17M has at least generated meaningful dialogue.
