Benjamin Sesko needed just 13 minutes off the bench to remind everyone why Manchester United paid a premium to bring him to Old Trafford. His headed goal against Everton secured a hard-fought victory and, more importantly, vaulted United into the Champions League places.
The 1-0 win over Everton on February 23 wasn’t pretty, but it was exactly the kind of result that separates top-four finishers from the rest.
The super-sub strikes again
Michael Carrick introduced Sesko in the 58th minute with the match locked at 0-0. The Slovenian forward wasted little time making his presence felt.
In the 71st minute, a swift counter-attack involving Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo carved Everton’s defense open. Sesko finished the move with a header that left Everton’s goalkeeper with no chance.
For Sesko, it marked his third goal in just four substitute appearances under Carrick.
What it means for the table
The three points carried significant weight beyond just the result itself. Manchester United’s victory pushed them into fourth place in the Premier League standings, opening up a three-point cushion over both Chelsea and Liverpool.
Sesko’s journey at United
Sesko arrived at Manchester United on August 9, 2025, signing a five-year contract after his transfer from RB Leipzig. The fee, reported at €76.5 million plus add-ons, made him one of the club’s most expensive signings.
His debut Premier League season yielded 11 goals. His effectiveness off the bench — three goals in four sub appearances — suggests Carrick sees value in deploying him as a second-half weapon against tiring defenses.
The start of the following season brought complications. A calf injury picked up during preseason limited Sesko’s early appearances, and as of September 2026, Carrick acknowledged that the striker was still building his fitness back up. The manager praised Sesko’s gradual improvement and hinted at increased minutes as his conditioning improved.
