Bill Ackman is putting his money where the servers are. The Pershing Square founder has amassed roughly $4 billion in combined positions across Microsoft and Meta, a bet that hyperscaler capital expenditures, projected to reach $700 billion, will define the next era of tech investing.
The Ackman playbook: Azure, AI, and infrastructure dominance
Pershing Square opened a Microsoft stake worth approximately $2.1 to $2.4 billion during Q1 2026. The thesis centers on Azure, Microsoft’s cloud platform, and its positioning as the backbone for enterprise AI workloads.
Ackman also built a roughly $2 billion position in Meta, attracted by the company’s AI platform ambitions. Together, these two positions represent one of the largest concentrated bets on AI infrastructure from a single hedge fund.
The $700 billion hyperscaler spending figure represents the cumulative capital expenditure forecasts for the largest cloud service providers as they build out data centers, purchase GPUs, and expand networking capacity to meet surging AI demand.
Ackman’s regulatory warning shot
In July 2026, he publicly cautioned against a moratorium on large data center projects in New York, framing it as a direct threat to US competitiveness in AI. His argument: if America makes it harder to build the physical infrastructure that AI requires, rivals, particularly China, gain ground by default.
What this means for crypto investors
Ackman endorsed the Helium network back in 2022, marking a notable, if brief, foray into the digital asset space. But his 2026 portfolio tells a different story: zero crypto positions, pure traditional equity exposure in the AI theme. Ackman has not mentioned any crypto tokens related to AI infrastructure trends in 2025–2026 reporting.
