BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) recorded roughly $33.4 million in client redemptions. The redemptions, tracked by on-chain analytics platforms like Arkham Intelligence and Lookonchain, required BlackRock to liquidate Bitcoin holdings to fulfill client payouts. BlackRock isn’t dumping Bitcoin because it lost faith. Its clients simply hit the sell button.
The ETF, which launched in January 2024 as one of the first US spot Bitcoin ETFs, has seen dramatically larger swings throughout 2025. November 2025 alone brought $127 million in outflows. December has already seen $251 million flow out the door. At certain points during 2025, single-day or weekly outflow totals exceeded $500 million.
Profit-taking is the most obvious explanation: Bitcoin has had significant price appreciation, and institutional investors tend to rebalance when an asset class runs hot. Risk rebalancing plays a role too. As Bitcoin’s weight grows in a diversified portfolio through price appreciation alone, managers trim positions to stay within their mandate’s allocation limits.
The redemptions are client-driven, not firm-driven. BlackRock’s leadership has repeatedly reaffirmed its long-term commitment to digital asset products, even as periodic redemption pressures create short-term noise.
The $33.4 million outflow on its own won’t move Bitcoin’s price in any meaningful way. But stacked alongside the $127 million November outflow and the $251 million December total, it paints a picture of institutional clients who are trimming around the edges.
