Brighton & Hove Albion are closing in on a deal for Venezia FC centre-back Michael Svoboda, with the Premier League club preparing to activate a release clause valued at just under €5 million. The club has already formally notified Venezia of its intention to trigger the clause, which becomes active in July 2026, putting Brighton in pole position to wrap up the signing early in the summer transfer window.
Svoboda is a centre-back who has been plying his trade in Serie A with Venezia, a club that extended his contract through June 2029. The inclusion of a release clause at just under €5 million essentially puts a ceiling on what the Italian side can demand.
Born on 15 October 1998, Svoboda has established himself as a reliable defensive option, making over 100 appearances for Venezia since his arrival in September 2020 and earning senior caps for the Austrian national team. Standing at 1.95 meters, he played a crucial role in Venezia’s promotion attempts.
Brighton aren’t the only club that noticed Svoboda’s qualities. Borussia Mönchengladbach and Hamburg have both been previously linked with the defender. The fact that Brighton appears to have moved first, and decisively, speaks to the club’s willingness to act quickly when they identify a target.
The timing of this move, emerging in mid-June 2026, positions Brighton to have Svoboda integrated into the squad before the competitive season begins. Once the clause is triggered, Venezia cannot reject the bid or demand add-ons, with the only remaining variables being personal terms with the player and medical checks. Given that Brighton has apparently already reached the verbal agreement stage, those hurdles appear to be formalities rather than genuine obstacles.
