ByteDance secures $29.6B syndicated loan to fund global AI push

ByteDance has signed a $29.6 billion unsecured syndicated loan arranged by nearly 30 banks, with Citigroup and JPMorgan coordinating the deal. The facility ranks as Asia’s second-largest dollar-denominated loan of 2026, trailing only SoftBank’s $40 billion facility earlier this year.

The original ask was $20 billion. Lenders sent back more than $30 billion in orders, so ByteDance simply took more.

Why the terms matter as much as the size

The loan is priced at an opening margin of 68 basis points over SOFR, the benchmark rate that replaced LIBOR for dollar lending. ByteDance’s previous loan in 2024, a $10.8 billion facility, priced at around 85 basis points over the same benchmark.

The three-year term comes with an option to extend to five years. The loan is also unsecured, meaning lenders have no specific assets as collateral.

More than 60% of the loan was underwritten by Chinese banks. U.S., European, and Singaporean institutions filled out the remainder.

Where the money is actually going

ByteDance described the proceeds as being for general corporate purposes. The real picture, according to people familiar with the deal, is more specific: the primary use is overseas AI expansion, with a focus on building data centers and infrastructure across Southeast Asia.

The loan follows the $10.8 billion facility ByteDance raised in 2024. The company has consistently chosen bank loans over an initial public offering as its primary mechanism for large-scale capital raises.

What this says about ByteDance’s position

Lenders confirmed their allocations ahead of the final signing, indicating a deal that came together with unusual smoothness for its size. The oversubscription also means ByteDance had the luxury of selecting which banks it wanted in the syndicate rather than chasing commitments.
