CATL shares surge after buyback plan and strong earnings signal battery giant’s dominance

Contemporary Amperex Technology, better known as CATL, just reminded everyone why it sits atop the global battery food chain. The Chinese giant posted first-half 2026 net profit of 43.28 billion yuan (roughly $6.37 billion), a 41.98% surge year-over-year, while simultaneously announcing a share buyback plan worth between 20 and 40 billion yuan.

Its Shenzhen-listed shares jumped on the news.

The numbers behind the rally

CATL’s first-half revenue hit 276.92 billion yuan, climbing 54.8% compared to the same period last year.

Power battery revenues rose 46.02% year-over-year. Energy storage sales exploded by 87.54%.

Gross margin held steady at 23.93%.

Second-quarter net profit came in at 22.5 billion yuan, representing a 36.5% year-over-year increase.

A buyback that means business

The share repurchase program runs between 20 and 40 billion yuan. At the upper end, 40 billion yuan (about $5.9 billion) would make it one of the largest buyback programs ever announced by a Chinese-listed company.

CATL’s board set a maximum purchase price of 573 yuan per share and plans to execute the buyback through centralized bidding on the Shenzhen exchange. The repurchased shares will be cancelled, not parked in treasury for later use. At the upper limit, the buyback could retire approximately 1.51% of CATL’s total share capital.

Why crypto and macro investors should care

The lithium supply chain is a direct connection point. CATL’s surging demand for raw materials influences pricing across the entire commodities complex. Lithium, cobalt, and nickel markets all dance to CATL’s production rhythm, and commodity price movements ripple into inflation expectations, which ripple into interest rate bets, which ripple into risk asset pricing.

Investors watching the energy storage sector should note that CATL’s storage revenue growth rate (87.54%) is nearly double its power battery growth rate (46.02%).
