Chelsea wants roughly €70 million for Marc Cucurella. Atletico Madrid would prefer to pay closer to €50 million. That €20 million gap is, to put it mildly, a problem.
The Spanish left-back has emerged as Atletico’s top defensive target for the summer 2026 transfer window, but Chelsea has shown zero interest in offering a discount. The club’s stance is straightforward: meet the asking price or look elsewhere.
The numbers behind the standoff
Chelsea paid €65 million to sign Cucurella from Brighton back in August 2022. Asking for €70 million now means the club isn’t just trying to recoup its investment. It wants a profit.
Atletico’s counter-position sits around €50 million, or roughly £43 million. That’s a meaningful offer by any standard, but it falls about £18 million short of Chelsea’s expectations.
No formal bid has been submitted yet. Atletico reportedly plans to open discussions shortly.
Why Cucurella, and why now
Cucurella fits the profile Atletico is chasing. He’s experienced at the highest level, he’s proven in a top European league, and he comes with international pedigree from Spain’s recent success, including Spain’s Euro 2024 win.
Chelsea sources have indicated that Cucurella hasn’t expressed any desire to leave. His contract runs until at least 2028, possibly 2029, which gives Chelsea an enormous amount of leverage.
Atletico isn’t the only club watching, either. Barcelona has been monitoring Cucurella’s situation, and Manchester City is also reportedly keeping tabs.
Chelsea’s broader transfer calculus
Selling Cucurella for less than the €65 million they paid would mean taking a hit on the books. Selling for €70 million, even if it’s only a small profit, keeps the ledger clean.
For Atletico, spending €70 million on a single player would represent a significant chunk of their summer budget, potentially limiting their ability to address other needs across the squad.
What to watch this summer
The wild card is Barcelona. If Barca enters the bidding seriously, it could create a genuine auction that pushes the price toward Chelsea’s asking level.
For now, Cucurella remains a Chelsea player with no apparent desire to force a move. Atletico’s willingness to pay €50 million shows serious intent. But serious intent and a closed deal are two very different things when the seller is demanding 40% more than you want to spend.
