Chelsea rules out move for Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall amid transfer plans

Lucas Bergvall wants to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer. Chelsea, despite previously kicking the tires, has decided it doesn’t want him back on the lot.

The 20-year-old Swedish midfielder has told Tottenham he’s looking for a fresh start after a season defined more by the bench than the pitch. Chelsea’s decision to walk away narrows the field for a player who arrived in north London with significant promise just two years ago.

From bright prospect to benchwarmer

Bergvall joined Tottenham from Swedish club Djurgarden in July 2024 for a reported fee of around £8.5 million. The deal came with a contract running all the way through June 2031.

Bergvall racked up 50 Premier League appearances for Spurs, chipping in one goal and four assists. Under current Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi, Bergvall’s minutes evaporated. Across De Zerbi’s last six matches of the 2025/26 season, the Swede logged just 112 minutes.

For a player born on February 2, 2006, sitting on the sidelines is the worst possible outcome. Bergvall apparently reached the same conclusion and informed the club he wants out.

Chelsea’s decision and Tottenham’s dilemma

Both Chelsea and Aston Villa made inquiries during the January 2026 transfer window. Tottenham rejected both approaches at the time. Chelsea has since officially ruled out a move for Bergvall.

That leaves Tottenham in an awkward spot. The club has a player under contract until 2031 who doesn’t want to be there, a manager who clearly doesn’t prioritize him, and a stated reluctance to sell to direct Premier League rivals.

World Cup timing adds another layer

Sweden qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and Bergvall is competing for a roster spot. For a 20-year-old trying to cement his place in a national team squad, playing 19 minutes a game for Tottenham is borderline career sabotage.

Aston Villa’s earlier interest is worth monitoring. Villa made inquiries alongside Chelsea in January, and unlike the Blues, there’s been no public indication that they’ve pulled out of the race. Tottenham’s reluctance to deal with direct rivals would filter out a significant chunk of other potential destinations.
