Chelsea have turned the opening minutes of Premier League matches into something resembling a speed run. Across their first four fixtures of the 2026/27 season, the Blues have found the net in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 7th minutes, a streak of early scoring that has no precedent in Premier League history.
The feat makes Chelsea the first team in the league’s existence to score within the opening five minutes of each of their first three matches in a season.
The fastest start in Premier League history
It began with João Pedro’s goal against Fulham, timed at just 31 seconds. Chelsea went on to win that match 3-2 away from home.
The second fixture, against Brighton, produced a fourth-minute opener in what turned into a wild 4-3 victory. Seven goals across just two matches set an aggressive tone for Xabi Alonso’s squad.
Then came Arsenal. Morgan Rogers needed only 77 seconds to put Chelsea ahead, though this time the early strike wasn’t enough to secure points. Arsenal fought back for a 2-1 win, handing Chelsea their first loss.
Why Alonso’s Chelsea are starting so fast
Chelsea have scored seven goals in their first two matches alone. Xabi Alonso took over Chelsea with a tactical identity built during his time at Bayer Leverkusen, where his teams were known for pressing intensity and quick transitions.
Conceding two goals to Fulham, three to Brighton, and ultimately losing to Arsenal despite scoring first all suggest that Chelsea’s high-energy starts come at a cost.
Historical context and what it means going forward
No team in the Premier League’s 30-plus year history has matched the record of scoring within the first five minutes of three consecutive season-opening matches. Two wins and one loss across the first three matches is a decent but not dominant return. The Brighton match required Chelsea to score four goals to win.
