Chelsea’s revolving door of strikers keeps spinning. The club has sold both Liam Delap and Nicolas Jackson in late August 2026, shipping them off to Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa respectively as new manager Xabi Alonso reshapes the squad in his own image.
Delap heads to Forest for £45 million plus £5 million in potential add-ons, while Jackson moves to Villa Park for £47.5 million upfront with an additional £17.5 million in performance-related bonuses. If every clause triggers, Chelsea stands to collect roughly £115 million from two players who cost the club a combined £62 million to acquire.
The Delap experiment that barely got started
Chelsea signed Delap from Ipswich Town for £30 million in June 2025, betting on a young English striker who had shown promise in the Premier League. The return on that investment was, generously speaking, modest.
Delap managed somewhere between one and three Premier League goals during his sole season at Stamford Bridge.
Both players were training away from the first team under Alonso’s orders, a clear signal that their Chelsea careers were over regardless of whether buyers materialized.
Jackson’s long road from Stamford Bridge to Villa Park
Nicolas Jackson’s Chelsea timeline reads like a soap opera. The Senegalese forward arrived from Villarreal for £32 million in 2023 with plenty of raw talent and a tendency to polarize opinion among supporters.
Rather than push through that inconsistency at Stamford Bridge, Jackson spent the entire 2025-26 season on loan at Bayern Munich, where he scored in double figures, proving he could perform at an elite level when given consistent minutes and clear tactical instructions.
Aston Villa moved quickly, agreeing a deal on August 28, 2026, that could reach £65 million with add-ons. That represents more than double what Chelsea originally paid, making it one of the more profitable sales in the club’s recent transfer history.
Alonso’s bigger picture
These sales don’t exist in isolation. They’re part of a broader clearout that also includes Marc Guiu, as Chelsea attempts to raise significant funds through multiple striker departures this window.
The money coming in helps offset Chelsea’s summer spending on new forwards. The club has already brought in Emmanuel Emegha and Danny Welbeck, among others, as Alonso assembles an attack that fits his tactical preferences.
Chelsea enters the 2026-27 season without European commitments, which means fewer matches and less need for the kind of bloated squad depth that justified keeping so many strikers on the books.
