Who is Pep Chavarría?
Josep María “Pep” Chavarría Pérez is a 28-year-old, left-footed defender standing 1.74 meters tall. Born on April 10, 1998, he made his La Liga debut at the age of 24. He joined Rayo Vallecano in August 2022 and quickly became a fixture in the squad. Over his time in Vallecas, Chavarría accumulated more than 105 La Liga appearances. His contract at Rayo ran until 2030, which explains why the Spanish club was able to command a respectable fee despite Chavarría not being a household name across Europe.
The Cucurella-shaped hole at Stamford Bridge
The sale of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid, reportedly for around €60 million, left Xabi Alonso without a first-choice left back heading into the new season. The fee for Chavarría, approximately £16.3 million, won’t require years of amortization gymnastics to justify on the books.
