Chelsea just agreed to pay £117 million for Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers, making the 23-year-old attacking midfielder the most expensive British player in transfer history. The verbal agreement, reached on July 18, came just days after England’s semi-final elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The deal and what it means for football
Rogers delivered 14 goals and 11 assists across 55 appearances for Aston Villa in the 2025/26 season. Those numbers caught the attention of every top club in England, but Chelsea moved fastest under manager Xabi Alonso.
Arsenal had reportedly already agreed personal terms with Rogers before Chelsea swooped in. The Blues’ willingness to pay a guaranteed £117 million, rather than structure the fee heavily around add-ons, apparently sealed the deal.
Rogers is expected to sign a six-year contract with an option to extend through June 2033. For context, Aston Villa bought him for just £8 million in February 2024 after he progressed through West Bromwich Albion’s academy. That’s roughly a 14x return for Villa in just over two years.

Chelsea’s spending spree in context

Arsenal’s interest added urgency. The fact that Rogers had already agreed personal terms with a direct Premier League rival meant Chelsea couldn’t afford to wait.
