Como defeats RB Leipzig 4-1 in stunning Champions League debut

Como 1907 announced their arrival on European football’s biggest stage with a comprehensive 4-1 dismantling of RB Leipzig in the opening round of the 2026/27 Champions League league phase. The match, played on September 10 at the intimate Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, marked the first time in the club’s 119-year history that they had competed in any European competition.

Four goals, four different scorers

Como wasted no time settling into the occasion. Martin Baturina opened the scoring in the 15th minute, setting the tone for what would become a dominant display. UEFA observers later named the Croatian midfielder player of the match for his all-around contribution.

Anastasios Douvikas doubled the lead before halftime, converting in the 38th minute to give Como a commanding 2-0 cushion at the break. Assane Diao made it 3-0 in the 54th minute. RB Leipzig’s Andrija Maksimovic pulled one back four minutes later, but it was purely cosmetic. Substitute Maximo Perrone added the finishing touch in the 90th minute, completing the 4-1 rout.

The atmosphere inside the ground was intense despite its reduced capacity. UEFA regulations limited attendance to approximately 10,000 to 11,000 fans. Club president Mirwan Suwarso made the decision to prioritize long-standing elderly supporters for ticket allocations.

The Fabregas project bears fruit

Cesc Fabregas, the former Barcelona, Arsenal, and Chelsea star, has been at the helm since 2024. Under his stewardship, Como climbed through the divisions and secured a fourth-place finish in the 2025/26 Serie A season, enough to earn a spot in the Champions League league phase.

The speed of the ascent is staggering. Seven years from Serie D, Italy’s fourth tier, to competing in the Champions League.

Leipzig’s European struggles continue

For RB Leipzig, this result extends an uncomfortable pattern. The German club has now lost their opening Champions League match in consecutive seasons.
