The arrival of Consensus Hong Kong, one of the biggest Web3 events, is putting Hong Kong’s ambitions as a virtual asset hub to the test.

The three-day event, starting Tuesday, is banking on Hong Kong’s reputation as a global financial powerhouse, with major industry players in attendance.

Consensus Hong Kong Chairman Michael Lau and InvestHK’s King Leung emphasized the city’s strength in capital markets, saying this made it a natural choice for the event.

“Anything related to innovation and capital markets — Hong Kong has to be the natural choice,” said Leung.

Despite regulatory uncertainty in 2020, Hong Kong has been working to re-establish itself as a global crypto hub since 2022. However, it now faces fierce competition from Singapore and other crypto-friendly regions.

One of the hottest topics at the event? Stablecoins.

Hong Kong’s de facto central bank, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, is preparing new regulations for stablecoins, signaling further integration between crypto and traditional finance.

Additionally, the re-election of crypto-friendly Donald Trump has boosted Bitcoin’s price and increased adoption across Asia, with 22% of people in the region now using cryptonearly 3x the global average of 7.8%.

Consensus Hong Kong is also the first major expansion of the conference since Bullish acquired CoinDesk in 2023. However, controversy surrounds the firing of CoinDesk’s editors, allegedly linked to an article about Tron founder Justin Sun.

Tron, a major sponsor of Consensus Hong Kong, denied any involvement.

Despite this, the event has drawn attendees from over 100 countries, with growing interest in crypto regulation and institutional adoption.

With billions in capital, stablecoin regulations, and major players backing the city, Hong Kong is making a serious bid to become Asia’s premier Web3 hub.

But will it be enough to overtake Singapore and regain its dominance?
