Constellation CEO: Existing power plants are bedrock for data centers

Constellation Energy CEO Joseph Dominguez made his position clear during the company’s Q2 2026 earnings call: the power plants already humming across the US grid are the foundation for meeting the explosive electricity demands of data centers. Not the ones on the drawing board. Not the ones stuck in permitting limbo. The ones that exist right now.

The case for what’s already built

Constellation controls roughly 55 GW of generation capacity, with about 22 GW of that coming from nuclear plants. Dominguez argued the economy simply cannot afford to sit around and wait for new power plants. Data center operators need reliable electricity now, and the current grid has substantial untapped capacity that can be directed their way.

Peak power challenges can be managed through batteries and demand response solutions. Constellation is pursuing both grid-supplied and co-located power solutions for data center clients.

Texas and the 474 GW question

Texas’ interconnection queue has accumulated approximately 474 GW of large-load requests, the vast majority from data centers. To put that in perspective, 474 GW is roughly five times the peak electricity demand Texas has ever recorded.

The Batch Zero interconnection process is currently paused for an audit. Constellation expects no meaningful delay from the review.

Nuclear uprates and the Calpine cleanup

Constellation has identified potential for approximately 1.1 GW of nuclear uprates across its facilities, allowing reactors to produce more electricity from the same physical plant without new construction.

Constellation is in the process of settling asset sale obligations tied to its acquisition of Calpine. The most recent transaction: the sale of its 606 MW Brazos Valley gas plant for $860 million. Once completed, Constellation expects to have a cleaner portfolio and more bandwidth to finalize data center contracts that are currently in the pipeline.
