Curve Finance’s yield basis markets generate $2B in trading volume during first half of 2026

Yield Basis, the DeFi protocol built on top of Curve Finance’s automated market maker infrastructure, racked up $1.97 billion in trading volume during the first half of 2026. Liquidity providers pocketed $10.98 million in fees for their trouble.

How the numbers break down

The first quarter of 2026 did most of the heavy lifting. Q1 alone accounted for roughly $1.1 billion of that total volume, with around $12 million in fees generated during the period.

Bitcoin price swings were the primary catalyst. When BTC gets volatile, traders flock to instruments that let them capture yield without getting wrecked by impermanent loss, which is precisely what Yield Basis was designed for.

Total value locked in the protocol sits between $130 million and $180 million as of mid-August 2026. That’s a healthy ratio relative to volume, suggesting capital in the pools is turning over frequently rather than sitting idle.

What Yield Basis actually does

The protocol was founded by Michael Egorov, who also created Curve Finance itself.

Yield Basis markets function as leveraged liquidity pools. The core idea is straightforward: liquidity providers deposit assets into pools built on Curve’s AMM technology, and the protocol applies leverage to amplify the yield those positions generate. The twist is that it’s specifically engineered to reduce impermanent loss through Curve’s stableswap math and its crvUSD stablecoin integration.

The protocol’s governance layer ties into Curve’s existing token ecosystem. Holders of veCRV, the vote-escrowed version of Curve’s governance token, have influence alongside veYB token holders.

In practical terms, 25% of YB tokens were initially earmarked for the Curve ecosystem in early proposals.

The fee switch and exchange listings

Yield Basis activated its fee-switch mechanism in December 2025, after the protocol attracted approximately $130 million in BTC deposits.

On the distribution side, YB tokens landed listings on Binance, Kraken, and Gate.

As of mid-August 2026, YB trades in the $0.07 to $0.08 range.
