David Raya’s path from anonymous loan goalkeeper at Southport FC to Champions League finalist with Arsenal is the kind of story that reads like fiction. Except the receipts are right there on his phone.
Sitting at Spain’s training camp in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Raya leaps out of his chair to prove a point. He scrolls through old match reports from his time in England’s fifth tier, finding one that doesn’t even bother naming him. It simply refers to “the goalkeeper, who played in yesterday’s match.”
From Barcelona to Blackburn to the bottom of English football
Raya left Barcelona for Blackburn Rovers’ academy at age 16 in 2012. By 2014, he was on loan at Southport FC in the National League. Raya has spoken about being bullied by 35-year-old journeymen, players whose primary skill set involved making life uncomfortable for anyone younger and smaller.
Three Golden Gloves and a title
Raya is the owner of three consecutive Premier League Golden Glove awards, the most recent coming with 19 clean sheets in the 2025/26 season.
Raya was also the runner-up in Arsenal’s Player of the Season voting for the 2025/26 campaign, a season that culminated in the club’s Premier League title.
Budapest and the Champions League heartbreak
The 2026 Champions League final in Budapest saw Arsenal face Paris Saint-Germain. Raya’s tournament had been exceptional — he saved penalties during the competition and recorded multiple clean sheets on the way to the final. But PSG won the final.
The World Cup question
Raya is battling Unai Simon for Spain’s starting goalkeeper spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Raya contributed to Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, which gives him legitimate claim to the jersey. The training camp in Chattanooga is part of Spain’s World Cup preparation.
