Deribit, the crypto options exchange that has long dominated Bitcoin and Ethereum derivatives, is now funneling its spot execution orders directly through Coinbase Exchange. The move is a direct consequence of Coinbase’s $2.9 billion acquisition of Deribit, which closed around August 14, 2025, and it marks one of the first tangible operational changes users will notice from the merger.
How the integration works
Deribit continues to operate its core derivatives business, covering options, futures, and perpetual contracts. What’s different is what happens when a Deribit user wants to execute a spot trade. Those orders now flow through Coinbase Exchange, tapping into its established order books rather than relying on Deribit’s comparatively thinner spot markets.
There are a few exceptions to the routing arrangement. Spot orders for BUIDL, USYC, and USDE are excluded from the Coinbase routing.
For institutional and API-connected traders, the changes will surface through the Starbase platform, with a broader migration timeline targeting September 2026 for full integration.
What $2.9 billion buys you
Coinbase structured its Deribit acquisition as a mix of $700 million in cash and 11 million shares of Coinbase Class A stock. At the time, it represented the largest acquisition in crypto exchange history by a significant margin.
Coinbase had been building out its Coinbase International Exchange for non-US markets, but it lacked the kind of institutional-grade options infrastructure that Deribit had spent years perfecting. Deribit’s strength has always been in crypto options, where it has historically commanded a dominant share of global volume in Bitcoin and Ethereum contracts.
Coinbase International Exchange, operating alongside Deribit, is positioning itself to consolidate order flow across multiple instrument types, creating something closer to a traditional prime brokerage experience where institutional traders can access spot, futures, and options strategies through a single platform with unified margin and risk management.
