Jürgen Klopp is coming home. Germany’s football federation, the DFB, is nearing a formal agreement with the country’s most recognizable coaching export to take charge of the men’s national team, according to reports from Bloomberg and corroborated by multiple outlets.
The timing is not exactly calm. Julian Nagelsmann resigned following Germany’s disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, leaving a vacancy that the DFB has moved quickly to fill.
What we know about the deal
DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke reportedly flew to New York to meet Klopp in person.
The two sides are working toward a four-year contract running through 2030, meaning the role would cover both the 2028 European Championship and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Klopp publicly acknowledged the talks on July 3 and 4, 2026, confirming his readiness to return to frontline coaching. His expected salary would come in slightly above Nagelsmann’s €7 million per year figure.
There is one complication worth noting. Klopp currently serves as Red Bull’s global head of football, a role with its own contractual obligations. Negotiations around his release from those commitments, including any compensation Red Bull might seek, are ongoing.
If the move completes, Klopp is expected to bring his trusted inner circle with him. Peter Krawietz, his longtime tactical analyst and assistant, and Pepijn Lijnders, who worked with Klopp at Liverpool before taking a head coaching role of his own, are both reportedly in line to join the setup.
Why this matters beyond the pitch
Germany hosted Euro 2024 and performed creditably before a quarterfinal exit. The World Cup departure in 2026 came after Germany was eliminated in the round of 32 to Paraguay in a penalty shootout.
There is also a parallel story developing in digital markets. Blockchain-based sports prediction markets have registered a notable uptick in activity tied to this story. No specific tokens are formally linked to Klopp’s appointment, but the increased trading volume on decentralized sports betting markets reflects broader engagement with the news.
What investors and market watchers should track
Beyond prediction markets, Adidas, the DFB’s primary kit sponsor, has commercial interests deeply tied to the team’s performance and public profile across apparel, broadcast, and digital licensing categories.
Klopp’s track record at Liverpool, where he won the Premier League, the Champions League, and multiple domestic cups, demonstrates his ability to build systems that sustain over multi-year cycles. Whether that translates to international management, where player availability is limited and squad cohesion is harder to build, remains the central open question.
