President Donald Trump wants to build a missile defense system that stretches from the ground to outer space. The Pentagon’s price tag: $185 billion through 2035. The Congressional Budget Office’s price tag: roughly $1.2 trillion over two decades. That’s not a rounding error, it’s a sixfold gap that tells you everything about how contested this program already is.

The initiative, dubbed the “Golden Dome” after an earlier working title of “Iron Dome for America,” aims to defend the US homeland against ballistic missiles, hypersonic missiles, and other aerial threats using a layered architecture spanning ground, sea, air, and space.

What the Golden Dome actually involves

Trump first issued an executive order on missile defense in January 2025, then formally announced the Golden Dome initiative in May 2025. The program is led by US Space Force Gen. Michael Guetlein and represents the most ambitious missile defense concept since Ronald Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative in the 1980s, the program critics nicknamed “Star Wars.”

The core idea is to merge existing, proven systems like the Patriot and THAAD missile defense batteries with a new constellation of space-based interceptors and tracking satellites. The space layer is the expensive part. The CBO estimates that space-based interceptors alone would account for roughly 60% of the projected $1.2 trillion total cost, driven by the need for thousands of satellites in orbit capable of detecting and destroying missiles during their boost phase.

The Pentagon’s $185 billion figure was itself revised upward from an initial estimate of around $175 billion after officials decided to accelerate certain space-based capabilities. An operational demonstration is targeted for 2028, with a more complete architecture planned for the mid-2030s.

As of April 2026, the US Space Force awarded contracts worth up to $3.2 billion to 12 companies for space-based interceptor prototypes, with integration demonstrations slated for 2028. By July 2026, additional awards included approximately $1.75 billion to L3Harris and Sierra Space for missile-tracking satellites and roughly $4 billion to SpaceX for its own missile-tracking satellite constellation. By August 2026, early tests for space-based interceptors had been completed, and a “first operational site” was established at Fort Story, Virginia.

The trillion-dollar question

The gap between $185 billion and $1.2 trillion captures the central tension of this program. The Pentagon’s number covers spending through 2035. The CBO’s estimate spans 20 years and accounts for the full lifecycle costs of maintaining a constellation of thousands of interceptors in orbit.

For context, the entire US defense budget for fiscal year 2025 was in the neighborhood of $886 billion. A program that costs $1.2 trillion over 20 years would consume a meaningful share of defense spending for a generation. The F-35 fighter jet, originally estimated at around $233 billion, has ballooned to a lifetime cost well above $1 trillion.

Technical feasibility and political stakes

Boost-phase interception, the technical cornerstone of the space-based layer, requires destroying an incoming missile in the first few minutes after launch, before it releases decoys or multiple warheads. The Strategic Defense Initiative spent billions in the 1980s and early 1990s trying to solve this problem before being scaled back.

Critics raise a strategic concern that deploying a comprehensive missile shield could provoke adversaries like China and Russia into building more missiles, more decoys, and more countermeasures. Proponents counter that the US cannot afford to remain vulnerable to hypersonic weapons that existing ground-based systems may struggle to intercept.

With funding disputes already emerging as a key challenge as of September 2026, the Golden Dome’s biggest obstacle may be the budget process itself. Defense contractors with exposure to the program, particularly Northrop Grumman, L3Harris, Sierra Space, and SpaceX, are positioned as central players in what represents a multi-decade procurement pipeline regardless of whether the full vision is realized.
