Emirates Adds Crypto Payments – Here Is Why Most Travelers Still Cannot Pay With Bitcoin

1 hour ago 10
  • Emirates has launched crypto payments through Crypto.com Pay, but the airline receives UAE dirhams, not cryptocurrencies.
  • The payment option is currently limited to eligible UAE users and operates under Crypto.com’s Stored Value Facilities (SVF) license issued by the Central Bank of the UAE.
  • While the launch expands digital payment options, most international travelers cannot yet use the new crypto checkout.

Emirates has introduced cryptocurrency payments for flight bookings through Crypto.com Pay, becoming one of the latest major airlines to embrace digital asset payments. However, the new system works differently than many travelers might expect.

Rather than receiving Bitcoin, Ethereum, or other cryptocurrencies directly, Emirates receives payment in UAE dirhams or approved dirham-backed stablecoins after Crypto.com converts the customer’s digital assets during the transaction.

The rollout applies to one country and one currency, making it a localized payment solution rather than a global crypto payment option.

Payments Are Automatically Converted

Customers choosing the crypto payment option fund their booking using a Crypto.com wallet.

Crypto.com handles the conversion before settlement, meaning Emirates never takes custody of cryptocurrencies.

The payment process operates under Crypto.com’s Stored Value Facilities (SVF) license, issued by the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE), which governs wallet-based and prepaid payment services within the country.

The model mirrors a payment framework previously outlined by Dubai authorities, where cryptocurrency is converted into local currency before merchants receive funds.

Mobile Approval Required

The checkout process differs from a traditional card payment.

Mobile users are redirected to the Crypto.com application to authorize the transaction, while desktop users complete payment by scanning a QR code with their mobile device.

Unlike a saved credit or debit card, every crypto payment requires confirmation through the Crypto.com wallet before it is finalized.

Service Is Currently Limited

Although Emirates serves more than 150 destinations across 80 countries, the crypto payment option is currently available only through the UAE framework.

Eligibility is tied to Crypto.com’s regulated payment infrastructure in the country, meaning many international travelers cannot access the feature.

The launch adds Crypto.com Pay as Emirates’ 15th payment gateway, joining a range of existing payment methods already offered by the airline.

Crypto.com Holds a Unique Regulatory Position

The rollout is made possible by Foris DAX Middle East FZE, Crypto.com’s UAE subsidiary.

Earlier this year, the company became the first virtual asset service provider (VASP) to receive an SVF license from the Central Bank of the UAE, allowing it to facilitate regulated crypto payments that settle in local currency.

The same regulatory framework is expected to support additional payment integrations, including Dubai Duty Free and certain government payment services, as the UAE continues expanding regulated digital asset adoption.
