Enzo Fernandez arrives at Manchester City after Chelsea transfer

Enzo Fernandez has officially touched down at Manchester City, completing one of the most expensive transfers in football history. The Argentine midfielder’s £125 million ($169 million) move from Chelsea was finalized on September 1, 2026, capping weeks of negotiations that tested the patience of both clubs and their fanbases.

The fee ties the British transfer record set by Liverpool’s signing of Alexander Isak in 2025. More notably, it makes Fernandez the first player ever to be sold for more than £100 million on two separate occasions.

The numbers behind City’s summer spree

Fernandez’s arrival pushes Manchester City’s total summer spending to a staggering £458 million, a Premier League record for a single transfer window.

City had already signed Elliot Anderson for £116 million and Ayyoub Bouaddi for £86 million earlier in the window. The Fernandez deal brings their midfield investment alone to £327 million.

Chelsea initially wanted up to £135 million for Fernandez but eventually settled at £125 million after negotiations.

Fernandez has signed a five-year contract that will keep him at the Etihad until the summer of 2031. He is 25 years old with 49 Argentina caps and two World Cup final appearances on his resume.

A familiar face in the dugout

One of the more intriguing subplots of this transfer is the reunion between Fernandez and manager Enzo Maresca. The two worked together at Chelsea before Maresca moved to the City dugout, and that existing relationship reportedly played a significant role in Fernandez’s willingness to push for the move.

Fernandez came through River Plate’s academy, won the Primeira Liga with Benfica, then moved to Chelsea where he collected a UEFA Conference League title and a 2025 Club World Cup winner’s medal, in addition to winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina.

What this means for both clubs

For Chelsea, the sale recouped a massive fee for a player who wanted out. The negotiations highlighted strategic vulnerabilities in the club’s planning, with Chelsea facing difficulties securing a suitable replacement amid last-minute haggling over fees.
