Erling Haaland has done what Sergio Agüero needed 18 derbies to do, what Wayne Rooney needed an entire career to do, and what no other player in Premier League history has managed to do quite this fast. The Manchester City striker has now scored 9 goals in just 8 Premier League meetings with Manchester United, breaking the joint record previously held by Agüero and Rooney, who each tallied 8.
A derby debut for the ages
Haaland announced his presence in the Manchester derby on October 2, 2022, with a hat-trick as City dismantled United 6-3. Three goals in one derby. Most players would be happy with three in a career’s worth of them.
He has now accumulated 11 goal involvements, counting both goals and assists, across his Premier League derby appearances. That figure puts him second only to Ryan Giggs, who needed 29 appearances to reach 13. Haaland has managed his total in roughly a fifth of the games.
Record-breaking context
The joint record of 8 derby goals had been shared by Agüero and Rooney. Haaland matched both of them by September 2025, when he scored twice in a 3-0 home victory over United. That game also saw him reach another milestone: 50 Premier League home goals for City in just 50 appearances.
His ninth derby goal pushed him past both legends and into sole possession of the record.
