Ethereum’s core developers just moved one step closer to making crypto wallets work more like normal software. During the All Core Developers Execution (ACDE) call on August 27, 2026, EIP-8141, titled “Frame Transactions,” was upgraded from Considered for Inclusion (CFI) to Scheduled for Inclusion (SFI) status for the upcoming Hegotá network upgrade.
Developer nixo.eth confirmed the advancement, noting strong community support for integrating native account abstraction directly into Ethereum’s execution layer. The Hegotá hard fork is planned for 2027, following the Glamsterdam upgrade expected in Q4 2026.
What EIP-8141 actually does
EIP-8141 introduces new transaction types with programmable features that blur the line between these two account models. The practical benefits are significant. Atomic batching would let users bundle multiple operations into a single transaction, so approving a token and swapping it no longer requires two separate confirmations. Third-party gas payments, sometimes called gas sponsorship, would allow applications to cover transaction fees on behalf of their users.
By making transaction validation programmable, EIP-8141 opens the door to signature schemes that can withstand quantum computing attacks. Ethereum wouldn’t be quantum-proof overnight, but it would have the architectural flexibility to upgrade its cryptographic foundations without another hard fork.
Moving beyond ERC-4337
ERC-4337, which launched in early 2023, introduced account abstraction at the application layer through a system of bundlers and an alternative transaction mempool. EIP-8141 aims to move account abstraction from that bolt-on approach into Ethereum’s core protocol, reducing reliance on ERC-4337 and off-chain infrastructure.
Vitalik Buterin has written extensively about the importance of enshrining account abstraction at the protocol level, arguing that leaving it as an application-layer concern creates fragmentation and limits composability.
The Hegotá pipeline is crowded
Roughly 66 proposals are currently under consideration for inclusion in Hegotá, with a deadline for developer preferences set for September 10, 2026. The SFI designation gives EIP-8141 a meaningful advantage. Moving from CFI to SFI means the proposal has cleared initial review and gained enough consensus among core developers to be formally penciled into the upgrade plan.
For context, the Merge finally shipped in September 2022 after repeated delays. The Dencun upgrade, which introduced proto-danksharding, arrived in March 2024 after its own series of postponements.
What this means for Ethereum’s competitive position
Networks like Starknet, zkSync, and Near Protocol have built account abstraction into their architectures from the ground up. By scheduling EIP-8141, Ethereum is closing a gap that competitors have been exploiting. The ability to sponsor gas fees, batch transactions, and use alternative authentication methods makes applications dramatically easier to use.
For traders watching upgrade cycles, the path from here to Hegotá deployment creates a series of potential catalysts. The September 10 preference deadline will narrow the field of competing EIPs. Glamsterdam’s Q4 2026 launch will serve as a proof point for Ethereum’s ability to execute on schedule.
