Telegram has partnered exclusively with The Open Network Foundation to make TON the blockchain for its mini-app platform. This collaboration will support Telegram’s massive user base of 950 million active users worldwide. 

This deal follows a 2023 announcement, where the partnership started gaining traction with Toncoin usage for pay-ins and payouts. The new agreement further strengthens ties between Telegram and TON.

The adoption of TON Connect as the exclusive protocol for wallet connections ensures smooth user experience, through simple transactions. This protocol will link Telegram’s mini-apps to blockchain wallets such as custodial and non-custodial wallets to implement TON Connect for transactions, user authorization, and on-chain signatures. Developers have one month to make the necessary changes to avoid user disruptions.

Telegram will also exclusively accept Toncoin for payments on its platform, including Telegram Premium, Telegram Ads, and Telegram Stars. Moreover, Toncoin will be the only currency used for services like Telegram Gateway, an alternative to SMS verification. 

Moreover, Telegram Mini App developers and channel owners will receive payments in Toncoin for their earned revenue, including Telegram Stars. This strengthens the role of Toncoin as the main cryptocurrency for the platform’s services.

Furthermore, Telegram plans to tokenize digital assets on the TON blockchain. These assets will include emojis, stickers and limited edition gifts, which will be tokenized as NFTs.
