At least three explosions were heard across southern Iran’s Hormozgan province early on May 25, rattling the coastal cities of Bandar Abbas, Sirik, and Jask. The blasts, which occurred around 1:30 a.m. local time, prompted the activation of air defense systems in the area. No casualties or significant damage have been confirmed.
Iranian state-run media, including Tasnim News Agency, reported at least three distinct blasts across the region. Authorities have stated the situation is under control, though investigations into the cause remain ongoing.
No official explanation for the explosions has been confirmed. There has been no verified claim of external military involvement, and Iranian officials have not attributed the blasts to any specific source.
Previous incidents in the area include a gas leak explosion in Bandar Abbas in January 2026 and a deadly port fire at the Shahid Rajaee facility in April 2025.
Bandar Abbas itself is home to Iran’s largest naval base and serves as a critical hub for both military operations and commercial shipping. Sirik and Jask, further along the coast, host infrastructure that plays a role in Iran’s energy export capabilities.
The Strait of Hormuz functions as one of the most important energy bottlenecks on the planet. The activation of air defense systems, even if precautionary, signals that Iranian military authorities treated the blasts as potentially more than an industrial mishap, at least initially.
