Fantasy Top, the on-chain trading card game that let users collect and trade digital cards of crypto influencers, is pulling the plug at the end of June. The platform announced the decision on May 20-21, marking the end of roughly two years of operation.
What happened and what’s left
The final competitions on Fantasy Top will wrap up on June 18. After that, remaining rewards and payments will be distributed within the following week before the platform goes dark for good.
Multiple gameplay modes, including prediction markets and arena competitions, were already shut down on May 21.
Fantasy Top returned more than $20 million in value to users over the platform’s lifetime and allocated $3.2 million to incentivize the influencers whose likenesses powered the card game. Pre-seed and seed investors received full dollar-for-dollar refunds.
The project had raised $5.6 million from Dragonfly Capital. The team also never launched a native token. The platform relied on trading fees to fund user payouts instead.
Why the model broke down
The core problem, according to the team, was that the traditional trading card game framework was fundamentally mismatched with on-chain incentives. Fantasy Top wanted committed players who cared about gameplay. What it got was speculators who cared about flipping cards for profit.
Lifetime trading volume proved insufficient to sustain the core TCG model, despite the team’s attempts to iterate. The platform experimented with various social features and gameplay dynamics over its two-year run.
The platform originally launched on Blast L2 before migrating to Coinbase’s Base network in July 2025.
The bigger picture for SocialFi and on-chain gaming
Fantasy Top’s post-mortem explicitly acknowledged that their model attracted the wrong type of user. The broader crypto market hasn’t reacted meaningfully to the shutdown announcement.
