FC Bayern extends Max Eberl’s contract until 2029, locking in sporting leadership

FC Bayern Munich’s supervisory board has confirmed that Max Eberl, the club’s board member for sport, will remain in his role through June 30, 2029. CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen received the same treatment, with both contracts previously set to expire in the summer of 2027.

The announcement on August 25 caps a remarkable turnaround in internal confidence for Eberl, who just months ago was far from a certainty to stay at the Säbener Straße.

From 60% to done deal

Earlier in 2026, honorary president Uli Hoeneß publicly pegged the likelihood of Eberl getting a new deal at roughly 60%. By late July 2026, however, Hoeneß had revised that figure to 100%. What changed was simple: results. A successful transfer window paired with strong on-pitch performances gave the leadership team the credibility it needed.

Bayern’s supervisory board chairman Herbert Hainer framed the extensions as essential to the club’s long-term trajectory, emphasizing the value of continuity and stability.

Under Eberl and Dreesen’s stewardship, Bayern have won two consecutive Bundesliga titles and lifted the DFB-Pokal.

Eberl’s journey to Bayern’s inner circle

Eberl joined Bayern on March 1, 2024, stepping into the sportvorstand role. Before Munich, he had built his reputation during a long and successful tenure at Borussia Mönchengladbach. His departure from Gladbach in early 2022, which he attributed to burnout, was one of the most closely watched stories in German football that year. A brief stint at RB Leipzig followed before Bayern came calling.

Dreesen served as CFO and deputy CEO before taking over the chief executive role in May 2023. His extension alongside Eberl signals that Bayern’s supervisory board sees the current leadership pairing as complementary: Dreesen manages the business side while Eberl runs the sporting operation.

What this means for Bayern’s competitive position

Marketing board member Rouven Kasper also remains in place, which means the club’s commercial operations will continue under the same leadership group.
