The interest rate futures market just got very, very crowded. SOFR futures open interest surged past 15.8 million contracts in recent weeks, an all-time record, as traders positioned themselves for what could be a pivotal Federal Reserve decision at the July 29 FOMC meeting.
The numbers behind the frenzy
The SR3 contract, the workhorse instrument for leveraged funds betting on short-term interest rates, hit a record open interest of 14.2 million contracts. Leveraged funds have been piling into short positions at a pace that suggests genuine conviction, not just hedging.
One specific contract tells the story particularly well. The SR3Z6, a December-dated SOFR contract, saw its open interest jump 28% over two months, surpassing 1.8 million contracts.
Total short-term interest rate futures open interest peaked at 18 million contracts across the board. The ZQ contract, which tracks 30-day Fed funds rates, exceeded 2.5 million contracts on its own.
The CME FedWatch tool showed rate hike odds for the July meeting fluctuating from as low as 7% to as high as 38%, eventually stabilizing in the 32-38% range as the meeting approached.
What this means for crypto investors
Bitcoin spent the lead-up to the FOMC announcement trading in a range between $63,000 and $65,500. Higher rates strengthen the dollar, increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like Bitcoin, and generally tighten the financial conditions that fuel speculative appetite.
Ethereum has shown similar sensitivity to rate expectations, trading in a compressed range alongside Bitcoin. The correlation between crypto assets and traditional macro indicators has only deepened over the past few years as institutional participation has grown.
With 32-38% hike odds priced in, a no-action outcome would effectively mean the market overestimated hawkishness. The July 29 decision represented a pivotal moment for traders anticipating the central bank’s first rate hike after a protracted period of holding rates within the 3.50-3.75% corridor.
