Fenerbahçe brings back İsmail Kartal as head coach, and here’s what it means for the club’s fan token

1 hour ago 15

Fenerbahçe has re-appointed İsmail Kartal as head coach, marking his fourth separate stint in charge of the club.

The move comes after the club’s high-profile experiment with José Mourinho, who managed the team for roughly two years following Kartal’s departure on May 31, 2024. Kartal spent the intervening period managing Persepolis in Iran from January 2025 through June 30, 2025, before answering the call from Istanbul once more.

The coaching carousel and what it signals

Kartal played for Fenerbahçe from 1983 to 1993, spending a full decade in the club’s colors before transitioning into management. His previous managerial stints with the club include periods in 2022 and 2023-2024.

Born on June 15, 1961, Kartal brings decades of institutional knowledge that no outside hire can replicate.

The fan token angle

Fenerbahçe launched a fan token ecosystem back in 2021 through a partnership with Paribu, the Turkish crypto exchange. That initial rollout generated approximately $31M in fan token sales.

As of mid-June 2026, the Fenerbahçe Token (FENE) was trading around $0.30 with modest daily trading volume.

The coaching change itself has no direct connection to any blockchain or digital asset initiatives. No announcements have accompanied Kartal’s return regarding new token utility features, NFT drops, or expanded Web3 partnerships.
