Fenerbahce sends board member to England for Marcus Rashford transfer talks

Fenerbahce board member Cihan Kamer has traveled to England to hold discussions over a potential deal for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford. The trip comes on the heels of Fenerbahce’s qualification for the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League, a detail that could prove decisive in luring a player who previously showed little interest in a move to Turkey.

Fenerbahce defeated Lyon on August 26 to secure their Champions League spot, and the draw took place the following day. Kamer reportedly wasted no time heading to Manchester once both boxes were checked.

From Marseille to Manchester

Kamer, who oversees football operations on Fenerbahce’s board, had already been in France alongside football director Oguz Cetin to finalize the signing of striker Mason Greenwood from Marseille. Rather than fly home, the pair reportedly continued on to Manchester to open a channel on the Rashford front.

Rashford, now 28, still has two years remaining on his Manchester United contract. That deal is reportedly worth around £325K per week. His market valuation sits at approximately €40 million. Manchester United’s preference for an overseas deal narrows the field of realistic buyers and gives clubs like Fenerbahce a clearer lane.

A shift in temperature

In mid-July, prominent transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that there were no active discussions regarding Rashford’s future at Fenerbahce. Romano went further, noting that Rashford himself was not contemplating a move to Turkey at that time.

Fenerbahce’s Champions League qualification transformed the club’s pitch. The Greenwood signing also signals that Fenerbahce is building something with a distinctly Premier League flavor, with Greenwood having come through the same academy system at United.

The financial puzzle

Rashford’s weekly wages of £325K would make him by far the highest-paid player in the Turkish league. Fenerbahce would likely need United to subsidize a portion of Rashford’s salary, or negotiate a significantly reduced wage package with the player himself.

The €40 million valuation also presents a hurdle. A player with two years left on his contract and an apparent desire to move on doesn’t command the same leverage as one locked in long-term, meaning the asking price could soften.

What to watch

Kamer’s physical presence in England suggests Fenerbahce is treating this seriously. For Manchester United, if Rashford isn’t part of the first-team plans, moving his wages off the books while collecting a meaningful transfer fee is good business. The overseas-only preference limits their options, but Fenerbahce’s Champions League status makes them a credible destination.
