A former employee at Elon Musk’s xAI and Google is trying to raise roughly $50 million in seed funding for a startup designed to help ordinary people prove their identities online. The company is called Moir, and its founder is Tina Oberoi.
Bloomberg reported the fundraising discussions on September 21, 2026, noting that no investors have been confirmed and no round has closed.
What Moir actually does
Most identity verification tools are built for companies, not people. When a bank or a social platform wants to confirm you are who you claim to be, they buy enterprise software to run that check. Moir is reportedly flipping that model around, building tools that let individuals take ownership of verifying themselves online.
Deepfakes are AI-generated videos, images, or audio clips that convincingly depict people saying or doing things they never actually said or did. Scammers use deepfakes to impersonate executives in video calls. Politicians find fabricated clips of themselves circulating before elections. Ordinary people discover their faces in content they never consented to.
Why this moment, why this size
Oberoi’s background includes hands-on experience at xAI, the AI company Musk founded in 2023, and at Google. Generative AI capabilities have been advancing faster than the policy and technical frameworks designed to contain their misuse. Regulatory bodies in the US and Europe have begun moving on AI transparency rules, but enforcement mechanisms remain thin.
Several well-funded companies are already working on detection tools, watermarking standards, and provenance frameworks for digital content. Moir entering at the individual-user layer is a specific strategic bet that the market for personal identity tools is large, underserved, and not yet dominated by any single player.
Oberoi has not commented publicly beyond what Bloomberg reported. No lead investor, no valuation, and no timeline for closing have been disclosed.
