Galaxy Digital is putting $5 million toward making Bitcoin quantum-resistant, a move that signals growing institutional urgency around what cryptographers call “Q-Day,” the moment a quantum computer becomes powerful enough to crack the encryption underpinning Bitcoin’s security.
Government experts have warned that Q-Day could arrive as soon as 2030.
The quantum clock is ticking
Galaxy Digital published a report on March 19, 2026, concluding that Bitcoin’s quantum vulnerabilities are significant but manageable.
The technical concern centers on elliptic-curve cryptography, specifically ECDSA-256, which Bitcoin uses to secure private keys. A sufficiently powerful quantum computer could reverse-engineer private keys from public keys, effectively letting an attacker spend someone else’s Bitcoin.
A March 2026 paper from Google Quantum AI, co-authored with the Ethereum Foundation, estimated that ECDSA-256 could be compromised with fewer than 500,000 physical qubits under optimal conditions. The hardware threshold for breaking Bitcoin’s encryption is lower than previously assumed.
How much Bitcoin is actually at risk
Approximately 35% of Bitcoin’s circulating supply currently has exposed public keys, according to a June 2026 working paper. These are coins sitting in addresses where the public key has been revealed on the blockchain, typically because the address has been used to send a transaction at some point.
Bitcoin’s total circulating supply sits north of 19.7 million BTC. Roughly a third of that could theoretically be scooped up by a quantum-equipped attacker if no migration happens before Q-Day.
Many of these exposed coins belong to early adopters and lost wallets, including Satoshi Nakamoto’s estimated holdings. Those coins can’t be moved to quantum-safe addresses by their owners if the owners are gone or unreachable.
Galaxy’s report noted substantial developer engagement on the problem. Bitcoin’s consensus mechanism makes protocol changes famously slow, and a quantum-resistance upgrade would be orders of magnitude more complex than prior contentious changes.
Early experiments and the road ahead
BTQ Technologies demonstrated a quantum-safe Bitcoin implementation in October 2025 that was compliant with NIST post-quantum cryptography standards.
NIST has been finalizing post-quantum cryptographic algorithms that could replace vulnerable schemes like ECDSA. The remaining bottlenecks are implementation, testing, and convincing a decentralized network of nodes to upgrade in unison.
Galaxy’s $5 million commitment signals that institutional capital is taking quantum risk seriously enough to fund preemptive solutions. Details about this commitment remain sparse as of mid-July 2026.
