HSBC is building a 100-person AI army in Singapore, and crypto-native finance should pay attention

HSBC is planting its AI flag in Singapore. The banking giant announced plans to establish a Global AI Centre of Excellence in the city-state, with ambitions to recruit more than 100 AI specialists by the second half of 2026.

What HSBC is actually building

The new center’s initial focus areas include customer wealth enhancement, agentic treasury solutions, and AI-enabled digital payments.

David Rice, HSBC’s Chief AI Officer, will oversee the center. The talent pipeline will span natural language processing, data science, and AI governance.

HSBC Group CEO Georges Elhedery framed the initiative around personalized customer experiences powered by AI, while emphasizing the need for ethical standards.

The center will also collaborate with Singaporean educational institutions and government bodies to build a local talent pipeline.

The AI hiring spree was announced alongside plans to bring on 100 wealth relationship managers in Singapore.

Why Singapore, and why now

Singapore has spent years positioning itself as Asia’s financial technology hub. The Monetary Authority of Singapore has been unusually proactive in creating regulatory sandboxes for everything from digital assets to AI-driven financial products.

The crypto angle is bigger than it looks

HSBC has already been exploring tokenized deposits and blockchain-based trade finance, including the launch of a Tokenised Deposit Service in 2025, which enhances cross-border payment efficiency. An AI center of excellence focused on payments innovation could accelerate the bank’s integration of distributed ledger technology into its core operations.

HSBC has also maintained a multi-year partnership with Google Cloud focused on AI and machine learning, providing a foundation for the new center’s initiatives.
