Inter Miami signs Casemiro as club’s crypto sponsorship history raises questions about digital asset plays in MLS

1 hour ago 16

Casemiro, the Brazilian midfielder who spent years dominating European football at Real Madrid and Manchester United, is about to suit up for Inter Miami CF. His visa has been approved, and he’s set to debut against CF Montréal on July 25, 2026.

Casemiro joined Inter Miami as a free agent, with the deal announced around July 22, 2026. His contract runs through the end of the 2027 MLS Sprint Season, with an option to extend until June 2029.

For context, this is a player who won five UEFA Champions League titles and previously transferred to Manchester United for a reported fee north of €70 million. Now he’s arriving in South Florida on a free transfer, joining a roster that already features Lionel Messi.

The move isn’t without controversy. LA Galaxy has filed a tampering allegation, claiming Inter Miami made improper contact with Casemiro. MLS is currently investigating the complaint.

Inter Miami’s crypto connections

This particular signing doesn’t include any cryptocurrency or digital asset component. No token deals, no NFT drops, no Web3 integration baked into the announcement. But the club has previously partnered with crypto firms including XBTO and Polkadot.

Why crypto investors should pay attention to sports deals

Sports sponsorships have been one of the most reliable on-ramps for crypto brand awareness. FTX had its name on the Miami Heat’s arena before its collapse. Crypto.com still holds naming rights to the former Staples Center in Los Angeles. Coinbase sponsors the NBA, WNBA, and MLS.

The risk, of course, is that the tampering investigation creates headaches. If MLS finds that Inter Miami violated league rules in pursuing Casemiro, penalties could range from fines to draft pick losses.
