Djed Spence is headed to Milan. Inter have wrapped up a deal worth up to £30M to prise the versatile English defender away from Tottenham Hotspur.
The 26-year-old is expected to touch down in Italy on August 13 or 14, 2026 for medical examinations before formally completing the move to the reigning Serie A champions. For Tottenham, the sale represents a tidy profit on a player they signed from Middlesbrough for £19M back in July 2022.
Inside the deal structure
The base fee sits in the range of £25.6M to £30M, roughly €30M to €35M at current exchange rates. On top of that, performance-related add-ons could push the total package to the full £30M ceiling. Tottenham also negotiated a 10% sell-on clause, meaning they’ll get a cut if Inter eventually move Spence along for an even larger sum.
From Tottenham’s perspective, the math works out clearly. They paid £19M, got first-team contribution including a Europa League winner’s medal, and now pocket at least £25.6M in guaranteed fees.
From afterthought to England international
After arriving at Tottenham in the summer of 2022, Spence found opportunities scarce in north London. The breakthrough came during the 2024/25 season, when Spence cemented himself as a genuine first-team option at Spurs. His versatility — the ability to slot in at either right-back or left-back — made him a tactical asset for the coaching staff. That season ended with Tottenham lifting the Europa League trophy, and Spence played a meaningful role in the campaign.
Senior England caps followed, including appearances at the World Cup. Born on August 9, 2000, Spence turns 26 just days before his expected arrival in Milan.
Why Inter want him now
Inter Milan are coming off their 21st Serie A title, a dominant 2025-26 campaign that reaffirmed their status at the top of Italian football. The club, under coach Cristian Chivu, identified Spence as an ideal candidate to strengthen their defensive lineup.
The 10% sell-on clause means Spurs will be watching Spence’s Inter career with more than casual interest. If he continues his upward trajectory in Milan, that small percentage could eventually translate into another meaningful payday.
