Inter’s Federico Dimarco ruled out for Champions League clash vs Real Madrid

Inter Milan will travel to the Spanish capital without one of their most important attacking weapons. Federico Dimarco, the 28-year-old left wing-back who has become central to nearly everything Inter do going forward, has been ruled out of the Champions League match against Real Madrid on September 8 after sustaining a mild left knee sprain.

The injury occurred during Inter’s Serie A fixture against Napoli on September 5, a game Dimarco actually influenced before leaving it. He registered an assist on Lautaro Martinez’s goal, showed enough fight to return after halftime, and then couldn’t continue past the 62nd minute.

What happened and why Inter pulled the plug

Dimarco’s substitution against Napoli initially raised alarm bells, but medical assessments conducted afterward ruled out serious structural damage. The diagnosis landed on a mild sprain, the sort of injury that sits in an uncomfortable gray zone: not bad enough to require weeks on the sideline, not minor enough to wave off for a massive European fixture two days later.

On September 7, Dimarco was spotted training with a bandage wrapped around his left knee. By the end of the session, Inter’s coaching staff, led by Cristian Chivu, made the call to exclude him from the squad traveling to Madrid.

A reevaluation is planned ahead of Inter’s next domestic match against Udinese, expected around September 14. No long-term fitness concerns have been flagged.

Carlos Augusto fills the void

In Dimarco’s absence, Carlos Augusto will take over duties on the left flank against Real Madrid. He also contributed an assist in the Napoli match, a handy reminder that Inter’s depth at that position is better than most clubs can claim.

Still, replacing Dimarco at full capacity is a different proposition than simply filling his spot on the team sheet. The Italian international has evolved into one of Serie A’s most productive wing-backs, combining defensive discipline with the kind of delivery from wide areas that makes strikers’ lives considerably easier. His crossing, his timing of overlapping runs, his set-piece delivery are the details that don’t show up in a basic lineup swap.

The bigger picture for Inter’s season

The Udinese match in roughly a week serves as a soft deadline. If Dimarco passes his reassessment and trains normally in the days before that fixture, this episode becomes a footnote. If complications arise, Inter may need to lean on Carlos Augusto and other options for a longer stretch.
