Isco becomes first player to feature in Champions League with five clubs from same country

Francisco Román Alarcón Suárez, better known as Isco, has done something no footballer has managed before. The 34-year-old Spanish midfielder became the first player in history to appear in the UEFA Champions League for five different clubs from the same country when he took the pitch for Real Betis against Lille on September 8, 2026.

Betis won 3-2 in their group stage opener, and Isco wasn’t just a passenger collecting a historical footnote. He provided the assist for Marc Bartra’s equalizing goal, proving that at 34, he still has the vision that once made him one of the most coveted midfielders in Europe.

A journey spanning five Spanish clubs and 16 years

Isco’s Champions League story began on November 24, 2010, when he stepped onto the pitch for Valencia against Bursaspor. He was 18 years old and played 19 minutes. Sixteen years later, the competition’s anthem still plays for him, just in a different shirt.

Between that debut and this record, the path wound through some of Spanish football’s most recognizable institutions. Valencia came first, then Málaga, where he announced himself as a genuine elite talent during their improbable run to the Champions League quarterfinals in the 2012/13 season.

Then came Real Madrid. Isco won five Champions League titles during his time at the Bernabéu, from 2013 to 2022. After leaving Madrid, Isco moved to Sevilla, adding a fourth Champions League club to his resume. Now at Real Betis, he’s pushed the count to five, all of them Spanish sides.

The previous record holders

Before Isco’s Betis debut in Europe’s top club competition, the benchmark stood at four clubs. Players like Hernán Crespo and Raheem Sterling had previously appeared for four different teams in the Champions League.

Over the course of his Champions League career, Isco has accumulated approximately 79 to 81 appearances in the competition, scoring 10 goals and providing 13 assists. The bulk of those numbers came at Real Madrid, naturally, but the breadth of clubs is what sets the record apart.

What Betis’s Champions League campaign means

The 3-2 victory over Lille was a tight, high-pressure contest where Betis fell behind, equalized through Bartra’s header off Isco’s delivery, and ultimately found a way to win.

Isco joined Real Betis in 2023. His move to Madrid from Málaga in 2013 was reportedly worth between €30 million and €65 million, a transfer facilitated in part by his winning the Golden Boy award in 2012.
